How to choose the right leather

Choosing leather starts with one question: what will you make with it? A handbag needs a firm, smooth surface, while a jacket needs a soft and flexible hide. Knowing the end use saves you money and avoids waste.
Look at the grain
Full grain leather keeps the natural surface of the hide. It is the strongest and ages beautifully. Corrected grain is sanded and finished for a more even look, and it costs less.
Match the animal to the product
Cow leather is strong and good for bags, belts and shoes. Goat leather is light and has a fine grain. Sheep leather is the softest and suits garments and gloves. Buffalo leather is thick and rugged, with a bold natural texture.
Check thickness and color
Thickness is measured in millimeters. Thin hides of 0.8 to 1.2 mm suit clothing, and thicker hides of 1.6 mm and above suit belts and upholstery. Ask for a sample swatch before a bulk order so you can judge the color and feel in person.
